The Life Cycle of New York Galleries What does being the center of the art world do to a neighborhood? BROOME STREET GRAND STREET WOOSTER STREET GREENE STREET MERCER STREET CROSBY STREET HOUSTON STREET CANAL STREET WEST BROADWAY BROADWAY LAFAYETTE STREET PRINCE STREET SPRING STREET opacity=0PRE-1950SIn the early 20th century, the area south of Houston, north of Canal, bounded roughly by West Broadway on one side and Lafayette/Centre Street on the other, was notorious for sweatshops and factory fires. Photo: Bob Adelman1968In 1968, a group called the SoHo Artists Association formed in order to help legalize loft living in manufacturing buildings. The reputations of these dealers helped cement the neighborhood as the center of the New York art world, though SoHo remained, in some ways, sparse. In 1996, the SoHo Grand Hotel opened on West Broadway (the Mercer would open the following year).

The area on the far western side of Manhattan now known as West Chelsea was once a working-class neighborhood of industrial docklands. Today it is better known for its art galleries and luxury apartments, but its past can still be glimpsed, sometimes literally. They belong to students at Guardian Angel School, a small private school founded in 1911 that serves students from pre-K through eighth grade. It is a school that primarily serves middle-class and poorer families looking for a better alternative to public schools. In an age of persistent and often painful inequality, the need for institutions like Guardian Angel has never been greater.
Between '97 and '02, HBO released TV series like "Sex and the City," "The Wire," and "The Sopranos." Counterprogram, counterprogram, counterprogramFrom its very inception in the early 1970s, HBO executives came to believe that if HBO was to thrive in the long-run, it would have to focus on doing things differently than the big three commercial TV networks: ABC, CBS, and NBC. When HBO executives sent the first episode of "The Sopranos" to a focus group, it scored horribly. The screening was attended by the film's cast, HBO executives, and a collection of Russian dignitaries. Anybody could watch a new TV series from the comfort of their home, and the actors starring in new TV shows were rarely famous.
